"They taught themselves!" Why diy Acro teaching isn't the best option!

We often hear this, and in our experience it's the Acro skills that children are most often "teaching" themselves. Whilst being active at home, working to develop a new skill or being dilligent in practicing something to become better at it are very good habits to form, in the case of diy teaching acro it might not be the safest habit to encourage and if your child is wanting to learn acro skills, the safest place for them to do this is undoubtably in an Acro class with a qualified Acro teacher.

Why though?

  1. Classes taught within the Acrobatic Arts syllabus build skills progressively, you need to do skill "A", to progress to skill "B". Children at home are unlikely to know these progressions and will try to skip many of the blocks - this is unsafe and can lead to injury both now and in the future.

  2. Children at home will practice the things they want to, or are already quite good at. But the things they need to practice (in order to build strengthen flexibility or building blocks for future skills) go un practiced, again an unsafe practice which can injury now and problems later.

  3. Acro teachers know that a good acro dancer isn't just bendy, they are strong too. This is why in every class from the youngest level strength and flexibility are developed in tandem - a child at home will not know this and are unlikely to work on any strength exercises, which can again... case injury as the bodies skeletal system isn't supporting the flexibility.

  4. Work both sides! As mentioned earlier, a child at home will practice things they are good at. So if their right leg can kick higher than their left, or if they can get closer to the ground in splits with their right leg forward they feel a greater sense of achievement with their right and keep practicing... neglecting the left. This leads to unevenness. As you can guess, in a acro class led by a qualified teacher both sides are worked evenly, from the youngest classes.

Our Acro classes are led by Qualified Acrobatic Arts teacher Clare are available from the age of 4 to any of our pupils attending dance classes.
